A galvanic anode is the main component of a cathodic protection (CP) system, which is used to protect buried or submerged metal structures from corrosion. It is made from a metal alloy with a more "active" voltage (more negative electrochemical potential) than the metal of the structure (typically steel). The galvanic anode (sacrificial anode) is usually attached to the vulnerable metal surface where it is exposed to the corrosive liquid. The potential of the steel surface is polarized more negatively until the surface has a uniform potential. It continues to corrode consuming the anode material until eventually it must be replaced. The loss (or sacrifice) of the galvanic anode material gives rise to the alternative name of sacrificial anode. Our galvanic anode mainly includes magnesium anode, aluminum anode, zinc anode, pure iron anode. In essence, it is a kind of galvanic cell reaction.
The principle of cathodic protection is to connect an external anode to the material to protect it from corrosion and to pass DC current into it. Thus the whole metal surface becomes cathodic and does not corrode. The external anode may be a galvanic anode (sacrificial anode). It can also be an impressed current anode where the current is impressed from external DC source. Due to its negligible consumption rate, durability and strength, impressed current cathodic protection has longer life than sacrificial anodes. The impressed current anode is also known as dimensionally stable anode (DSA) or insoluble anode. Our impressed current cathodic protections mainly include silicon iron anode, MMO anode, graphite anode and flexible anode.
Cathodic Protection
Description:
Cathodic protection (CP) is a kind of electrochemical protection technology. The cathode protection (galvanic protection) is used to exert an impressed current on the metal surface, make it work as a cathode of an electrochemical cell, thus control the electronic migration of metal corrosion, and avoid or weaken the corrosion. Cathodic Protection mainly includes galvanic anode, impressed current anode, extruded anode for water heater, cathodic protection accessory (galvanic protection accessory).
Working Principle:
When the metal electrolyte solution corrosion system is affected by cathodic polarization, with the negative shift of electric potential, metal anode oxidation reaction overpotential decreases and the reaction rate decreases, thus metal corrosion rate decreases. This phenomenon is termed cathodic protection effect. The protective method of making use of this effect to reduce metal equipment corrosion is called cathodic protection (galvanic protection).
Application:
Cathodic protection (cathode protection) system is used to protect a wide range of metallic structures in various environments. Currently, cathodic protection (galvanic protection) technology is widely used in soil, steel water or fuel pipelines and storage tanks such as home water heaters, steel pier piles, ship and boat hulls, offshore oil platforms, onshore oil well casings and metal reinforcement bars in concrete buildings and structures. Besides, galvanic protection can be applied to galvanized steels, in which a sacrificial coating of zinc on steel parts protects them from rust.
