Description:
The principle of cathodic protection is to connect an external anode to the material to protect it from corrosion and to pass DC current into it. Thus the whole metal surface becomes cathodic and does not corrode. The external anode may be a galvanic anode (sacrificial anode). It can also be an impressed current anode where the current is impressed from external DC source. Due to its negligible consumption rate, durability and strength, impressed current cathodic protection has longer life than sacrificial anodes. The impressed current anode is also known as dimensionally stable anode (DSA) or insoluble anode.
